From this they deduce that Aang must have been frozen for at least that long. A chance encounter with an abandoned Fire Nation ship reveals that Aang is unaware of the war that has been waging between the Fire Nation and the other three nations of the world for 100 years, a war which began with the apparent annihilation of the Air Nomads. This surprises them, as airbenders were believed to be extinct for 100 years.
